"What should I expect during my initial consultation?"

May 7th, 2012

Great question! When you first come in for your initial consultation, Drs. Leone and Vaughn will conduct a comprehensive examination to assess your oral health. This will better enable us to determine the best treatment method for you.

Your orthodontic evaluation will consist of an oral and facial examination to assess your oral health. We will have you take intraoral and facial photographs as well as panoramic and cephalometric X-rays to help determine the proper orthodontic treatment method. Then, an impression of your teeth and bite will be taken to construct a model of your mouth. (This will help us when examining your diagnostic records).

Then, we will discuss your options with you. Our team feels it’s important to take the time to carefully examine your diagnostic records after your consultation so that we can more thoroughly prepare for your treatment at Leone and Vaughn Orthodontics. This additional preparation will ensure that you receive the best orthodontic care possible. At this time, we encourage you to ask us any questions you may have about your treatment.

If you are seeking orthodontic treatment for your child, our staff asks that both you and your child attend the initial consultation. We feel it is important that both you and your child completely understand the doctor’s recommendations before we proceed with treatment.

Give us a call today and schedule a consultation! We look forward to hearing from you!

May marks National Teen Self-Esteem Month! From Drs. Leone & Vaughn

April 30th, 2012

At Leone & Vaughn Orthodontics, we know image is everything. At an age when image is so important, the thought of having braces may intensify the already-delicate confidence of today's teens. Well, May, which is almost here, is National Teen Self-Esteem Month, and during this time, parents are encouraged to act as positive role models, help stop negative self-images, and improve confidence and security among teenagers.

One of the great ways to improve your confidence is to improve your smile. And that begins with a consultation with Drs. Leone & Vaughn. After all, what better time to avoid having crooked teeth in your adulthood?

We invite you to give us a call to schedule a consultation or ask us on Facebook!

"When should my child visit for an orthodontic consultation?"

April 19th, 2012

Great question, thank you! Many parents assume they must wait until their child has all of his or her permanent teeth to visit our Interbay or Madison Park offices for a consultation, only to discover treatment would have been much easier if started earlier. Did you know the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an orthodontic check-up no later than age seven?

That’s right—seven.

Ok, so what’s so great about age seven, you ask? Enough permanent teeth have arrived for Drs. Leone and Vaughn to make a determination about whether any problems are present. The first molars have come in, providing an opportunity to check for malocclusion, or what Drs. Leone and Vaughn call “bad bite.” Also, the incisors have begun to come in, and problems such as crowding, deep bites and open bites can be detected.

Orthodontic evaluation at an early age provides one of two positive outcomes: For some, early identification or problems will lead to easier or shorter orthodontic treatment in the future. For others, a healthy prognosis will provide immediate peace of mind.

Early evaluation, of course, may signal a need for early treatment. For some children, early treatment can prevent physical and emotional trauma. Aside from spurring on years of harmful teasing, misaligned teeth are also prone to injury and are detrimental to good oral hygiene. So, if your child is nearing his or her seventh birthday, please give us a call to schedule a complimentary consultation.

You and rubber bands, from Drs. Leone & Vaughn

March 19th, 2012

Rubber bands, or elastics, can be an integral aspect of orthodontic care, so if Drs. Leone or Vaughn have prescribed elastics as a part of your treatment, it’s important to follow the directions fully. Elastics help to align your bite or cause teeth to move in different directions and straighten more quickly. Drs. Leone & Vaughn will instruct you how to hook one end to an upper bracket and the other end to a lower bracket so the rubber band goes vertically or diagonally from one bracket to another. The tension of the rubber band produces pressure on the bracket, which causes the teeth to move and straighten. This tension is also sufficient to correct an overbite or an under bite in the jaw.

If rubber bands are a part of your treatment plan, there are a few things to keep in mind. With rubber bands, you won’t be able to open your mouth fully, so they will have to be removed when you eat and reapplied after meal time. Many times, rubber bands are only needed at night, so you won’t need to worry about eating with them. Also, if you try to open your mouth too wide, your rubber bands might snap – so be careful!

Failure to wear your elastics full time or as instructed can lengthen your treatment time and may make it more difficult to achieve an optimal result. But don’t worry; your time in elastics will be well worth it when you see your beautiful, new smile.

The importance of retainers, from Drs. Leone & Vaughn

March 5th, 2012

If you recently completed treatment at Leone & Vaughn Orthodontics, we’d like to congratulate you! Now that your braces have been removed, Drs. Leone & Vaughn will provide—or have provided you—with retainers. After braces are removed, teeth can shift out of position if they are not stabilized. Retainers provide that stabilization. They are designed to hold teeth in their corrected, ideal positions until the bones and gums adapt to the treatment changes. Wearing retainers exactly as instructed by Dr. Leone & Vaughn is the best insurance that the treatment improvements last for a lifetime. Here are some things to remember when you receive your retainers:

* Wear your retainers full time, until Drs. Leone or Vaughn instruct otherwise. Wearing your retainers at night ensures that your pearly whites won’t relapse.
* Take your retainers out when eating...and always put retainers in their case! (Most appliances are lost in school lunch rooms or restaurants.)
* Clean retainers thoroughly once a day with a toothbrush and only a small amount of toothpaste. Use warm but not hot water.
* When retainers are not in your mouth they should ALWAYS be in a retainer case.
* Retainers are breakable, so treat them with care. If retainers are lost or broken, give us a call immediately.
* Remove retainers when swimming or during any sporting activity in which the retainers could fall out and get broken or lost (cheerleading, basketball, etc.) or when you should be wearing a mouth guard (football, soccer, etc.).

We hope this helps! You can always contact Leone & Vaughn Orthodontics if you have any questions!

Patient Question: “Are Braces Right For Me?”

February 20th, 2012

Braces aren’t just for kids anymore! Regardless of your age, if you’ve always wanted to smile with confidence, but knowing that your teeth were less than perfect held you back, getting braces might be the solution you’ve been looking for. A straight smile can do so much for your self-esteem, and at Leone & Vaughn Orthodontics, we want to help you achieve the smile of your dreams.

In addition to the aesthetic benefits of orthodontic treatment, there are many health benefits as well. Teeth that are properly aligned are easier to clean and function more optimally when it comes to eating and speaking.

If you recognize any of these signs in your child or yourself, it might be time to schedule a consultation with Drs. Leone & Vaughn.

· Early or late loss of baby teeth
· Difficulty chewing or biting
· Mouth breathing
· Sucking the thumb or fingers, or other oral habits
· Crowded, misplaced, or blocked-out teeth
· Jaws that shift, make sounds, protrude, or are recessed
· Speech difficulty
· Biting the cheek or biting into the roof of the mouth
· Protruding teeth, teeth that meet in an abnormal way, or teeth that don’t meet at all
· Grinding or clenching of teeth
· Inability to comfortably close lips

Drs. Leone & Vaughn will be able to assess your orthodontic needs during your appointment and explain all the wonderful benefits you can expect to receive during your time in braces. We look forward to seeing you or your child for a complimentary consultation!

Ask Drs. Leone & Vaughn: How long does orthodontic treatment take?

February 13th, 2012

Your smile is totally unique, so the time you’ll need to spend undergoing orthodontic treatment will also be unique. Generally, orthodontic treatment will take about two years, and this is for good reason. During this time, your teeth will slowly move into their desired positions, leaving you with a great smile with as little discomfort as possible. Rushing treatment can result in a less than perfect smile with a greater chance of tooth movement after your treatment is complete. At Leone & Vaughn Orthodontics, we don’t want to waste your time with treatment that won’t retain your smile for the rest of your life.

Of course, treatment time will vary depending on your specific situation. Very minor tooth movement may only take a few months to correct, while serious malocclusion (poor bite) may need more than two years to correct. Only Drs. Leone & Vaughn will be able to accurately estimate the time your treatment will take. But trust us—it’ll all be worth it in the end!

Has your child or teen visited Leone & Vaughn Orthodontics for an orthodontic consultation? If not, please give us a call and let us help him or her begin the journey to a gorgeous smile!

At Leone & Vaughn Orthodontics, February Marks National Children's Dental Health Month

January 30th, 2012

We can't believe it's almost February! Each February for the past 62 years, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children's Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

For kids wearing braces, brushing and flossing can become more difficult, requiring extra time and vigilance to remove food particles that accumulate on and between the teeth and in braces. If the health of your teeth is ignored during treatment with braces, the results can be significantly compromised. Both Drs. Leone and Vaughn are available and happy to explain why effective brushing and flossing is one of the most critical actions needed from patients during orthodontic treatment. Have you visited our Madison Park or Queen Anne office lately? Give us a call and schedule an appointment!

Dreaming of a dazzling smile? We can help!

January 23rd, 2012

The fact is, most of us aren’t born with a red carpet smile. And that’s where our team at Leone and Vaughn Orthodontics can help. Of course, orthodontic treatment help make your teeth stay strong, healthy and become perfectly-aligned. But did you know you can get the beautiful straight teeth you've always wanted — without braces?

Our team at Leone and Vaughn Orthodontics are proud to offer an adult-friendly option for straightening teeth called Invisalign, which uses a series of invisible, removable and comfortable aligners that no one can tell you're wearing. So, you can smile more during treatment as well as after. Not only are the aligners invisible, they are removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment. Plus, brushing and flossing are no problem. They are also comfortable, with no metal to cause mouth abrasions during treatment. And no metal and wires usually means you spend less time at our office getting adjustments. Invisalign also allows you to view your own virtual treatment plan when you start so you can see how your straight teeth will look when your treatment is complete.

If you’ve been thinking about getting that perfect smile, we would love to have you in for a visit. Please give us a call to set one up! A complimentary consultation at our Madison Park or Queen Anne office can determine if Invisalign is right for you. See you soon!

How valuable is YOUR smile? From Drs. Leone and Vaughn

December 5th, 2011

At Leone & Vaughn Orthodontics, we are known for providing exceptional treatment, excellent customer service, and amazing smiles!

And speaking of smiling, in a poll conducted by Glamour Magazine earlier this year, people were asked, “If you had to pick between having perfect teeth, eyesight or hair, which would you choose?”

Well, 44 percent of folks out there chose teeth! In addition, the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, or AACD, conducted a study and found that 99.7 percent of those polled believed a smile is an important social asset. Respondents said straightness, whiteness, cleanliness, as well as the sincerity and sparkle of one’s smile were all important factors not only socially, but career-wise as well.

Serving Seattle and Bellevue, Drs. Gregory Vaughn and Paola Leone are your orthodontic specialists, offering Invisalign and braces for children, teens, and adults. Contact our Queen Anne or Madison Park office to schedule your complimentary consultation! See you soon!

November Featured Patient Testimonial!

November 28th, 2011

Thanks to Ele, who wrote in recently to tell us what she loves about our team at Leone and Vaughn Orthodontics!

Thanks so much Tuesday! I left your office feeling a sense of relief and hope about my situation and I'm very much looking forward to my next visit and start to my treatment! You made me feel right at home and comfortable trusting my intuition that Dr. Leone and your team was a good fit for me. I will be sure to call or email as questions come up prior to my next visit. Until we see each other, take care and trade those running shoes in for a yoga mat (a regular mat, not a hot yoga mat) :-)

Our patients at Leone & Vaughn Orthodontics impact us in so many ways, and for this we are all so very grateful!

Ask Drs. Leone & Vaughn: "I just got braces. Now what?"

November 15th, 2011

We love when patients ask us that question! Now that you’re wearing braces, it’s just as important to maintain a good oral hygiene regimen as you did before before orthodontic treatment began.

Braces are known to trap food particles and make it difficult to brush or remove plaque, which is why Drs. Leone & Vaughn and our team at Leone & Vaughn Orthodontics recommend that you brush and floss after every meal. We also encourage you use a proxabrush to help with the smaller areas where your toothbrush doesn’t reach. We encourage the use of fluoride rinse as well; ask us for a recommendation!

When your braces are initially placed, your teeth are likely to be very sensitive. You may experience discomfort for up to 3 or 5 days, which is why we encourage you to eat soft foods during that time. Remember, the less pressure you put on your teeth, the less discomfort you will have.

You may also be thinking, “Okay, so what can I eat?” We would encourage you to avoid eating sticky, hard, crunchy or chewy snacks that can stick to your teeth.

Both Drs. Leone & Vaughn will tell you it’s crucial to regularly check your braces for bent or loose wires and brackets. In the event of a loose/broken wire or bracket, please call our Queen Anne or Madison Park office immediately to schedule an appointment for repair.

Lastly, in addition to visiting Leone & Vaughn Orthodontics during your orthodontic treatment for adjustments, you should visit your dentist for professional check-ups and teeth cleaning appointments about every six months, or as recommended by your dentist.

Are you wearing your mouthguard?

November 7th, 2011

With fall sports close to wrapping up and winter sports right around the corner, many patients here at Dr. Leone & Vaughn Orthodontics will once again pick up the ball, bring the cleats out of seasonal retirement and hit the fields for the return of sports action! During this time, however, Drs. Leone and Vaughn urge our young athletes to play it safe when out on the field. Here are a few ways to ensure your mouth’s safety this fall and winter, courtesy of our friends at the Canadian Association of Orthodontists:

1. Wear mouth guards for contact sports such as basketball, wrestling and hockey
2. Wear a helmet
3. Wear protective eyewear
4. Wear a face shield to avoid scratched or bruised skin
5. Be alert, even as a spectator

We hope that helps. Drs. Leone and Vaughn will both tell you protective gear is vital for anyone engaging in tooth or mouth-threatening activities. If you have any further questions about any of these tips, please contact our Queen Anne or Madison Park office or ask us on Facebook. Stay safe!

Every time I come into the office I am greeted and welcomed like a friend. I really appreciate that!. Dr. Vaughn and Dr. Leone take the time at each of my visits to explain to me my progress as well as what's to come. I always feel like I have their undivided attention. The offices are beautiful and high tech, even free wifi. I have only had my braces on for 6 months, but they look beautiful. I can't say enough about what an amazing office this is. If you are looking for exceptional care, look no further because you have found the place to be." - Tim

"My experience at Leone & Vaughn was life-changing. I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to work with them. At 24 years of age I decided to get braces - I found that I wasn't smiling in photos and I was embarrassed of my teeth. I consulted with about 3 different orthodontists in the Seattle area and decided to go with L&V - I liked how comfortable and approachable both Dr. Leone and Dr. Vaughn were, the professionalism of their office, and the wide range of services and solutions offered. They are technology early-adopters which I think makes them stand apart from older offices ... The before and after pictures are incredible - I have such a great smile now and am not afraid to show it off. It's made me a happier and more self-confident person and was worth every penny. If you're looking for a great orthodontist, look no further than Leone & Vaughn. They're amazing!" - Alicia

"My experience with Leone & Vaughn was amazing. I was not sure about getting my teeth straightened, not only did they make it easy for me they worked well with my insurance and allowed me to make payments. Super professional, never kept me waiting, and flexible with my crazy schedule. I would HIGHLY recommend their services to anyone!" - Sky

Thanks to everyone who continues to write in - Your Testimonials Matter! Our biggest smile comes when our patients refer us to their family and friends. Your positive experiences shared with others is the best way to pass it forward.

If you are Google, Yelp, or CitySearch users, we would greatly appreciate you sharing your experiences there to help us increase our local "word of mouth."

“Dentists, Orthodontists … What’s the Difference?”

October 17th, 2011

“Dentists, Orthodontists, they’re all the same right?” We hear our patients asking this question as they wonder about the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist. Before becoming orthodontists Drs. Gregory Vaughn and Paola Leone started out in dental school and earned a dental degree, just like your general dentist. After dental school however, Drs. Leone and Vaughn decided they wanted to learn more about orthodontics, which is one of nine specialties within the dental field. So they stayed in school for a few more years and became experts in orthodontics, which focuses on tooth and jaw alignment and bite problems like overbites and under bites.

Other dental specialties you may have heard of include endodontic (focusing on the soft tissue inside your teeth), periodontic (focusing on the gums and other tissues surrounding your teeth) and prosthodontic (focusing on restoring and replacing damaged teeth).

Isn’t it nice to know there are dental experts here at Leone and Vaughn Orthodontics to help you through any type of treatment your teeth, jaw and gums might need?

Don't skip those regular checkups, especially in October!

October 11th, 2011

Drs. Gregory Vaughn and Paola Leone want to know: Are you brushing and flossing daily properly during your treatment? If the answer is yes, that’s great! But, don’t forget that it’s also important for you to visit your general dentist every 3-to-6 months in addition to brushing your teeth and flossing (and visiting Leone & Vaughn Orthodontics, of course). Regular dental checkups are important for maintaining good oral health, especially during orthodontic treatment.

It's the perfect time for a visit to the dentist. Why? Because not only is October National Orthodontic Health Month, it's also National Dental Hygiene Month!

Your general dentist can check for problems that might not be seen or felt, detect cavities and early signs of decay, treat oral health problems early and show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth.

During an oral exam your dentist can check the health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Checkups will also include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing. If you have not been to the dentist in the last six months, let us know during your next visit and we will provide a few great references in Seattle, Bellevue or surrounding areas!

October marks National Orthodontic Health Month at Leone and Vaughn Orthodontics!

October 4th, 2011

For our team at Leone & Vaughn Orthodontics, it’s hard to believe October is already upon us! October marks National Orthodontic Health Month, and this month-long event is organized by our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO.

We know there are many treats can cause havoc for trick-or-treaters who are going through treatment at Leone and Vaughn Orthodontics, and these treats may cause damage that could prolong your treatment time with Drs. Leone or Vaughn. The AAO recommends our patients avoid the following Halloween treats:

• Caramel
• Nuts
• Popcorn (including un-popped kernels)
• Taffy
• Jelly beans
• Hard pretzels
• Licorice
• Bubblegum
• Ice

If you damage your braces, please give us a call immediately. Typically, small problems can be solved by giving us a call. Loose brackets or wires can usually be made more comfortable by applying some wax until you are able to come into our Madison Park or Queen Anne office.

Ask Drs. Leone and Vaughn: “Where can I get more info about braces?”

September 29th, 2011

Great question! Besides here on the Leone & Vaughn Orthodontics website, which provides you with a plethora of information about all things braces and Invisalign, we would like to point you to a helpful website: Our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO, have provided lots of important information about everything braces, including myths and facts of orthodontics, tips for a better orthodontic experience and cool webisodes about orthodontics.

We encourage you to check out AAO today and feel free to contact us if you have any questions here on our blog or on our Facebook page.

Hope this helps! Enjoy your weekend!

- Sports drinks

September is Self-Improvement Month! From Leone and Vaughn Orthodontics

September 6th, 2011

These days, Americans everywhere are putting greater emphasis on health, fitness and self-improvement, and more people are seeking orthodontic treatment to improve their smile. September happens to be Self-Improvement Month, and our team at Leone and Vaughn Orthodontics know that orthodontic treatment is an investment in self-improvement that will reap benefits for a lifetime. And, recent advances in orthodontia, such as Invisalign and more effective brackets and wires, now make orthodontic treatment more palatable for many interested in obtaining that beautiful smile.

Not only does orthodontic treatment give you that beautiful smile, it can also benefit your dental and general health. If teeth are poorly aligned, removing plaque and tartar by brushing and flossing alone may be difficult. A poor bite may result in fractured or excessively worn tooth surfaces, and the extra stress caused by a poor bite may even result in problems with your jaw joints.

If you’ve been thinking about getting that perfect smile, contact our Queen Anne or Madison Park office to schedule your complimentary consultation today! We hope you all had a wonderful Labor Day weekend!

In order to accommodate all of our patients’ busy schedules, it is important that you plan ahead for your appointments so that we are able to provide you with an appointment time that is convenient for you.

As always, please remember to give us advanced notice if you’re unable to make your regularly-scheduled appointment. If we receive enough notice, we might be able to schedule another patient for that time. Feel free to give us a call if you have any questions, or if you would like to schedule your fall appointment.

We’ll see you soon and hope summer is winding down nicely for all our patients!

Breaking bad habits, from Drs. Leone and Vaughn

August 24th, 2011

At Leone and Vaughn Orthodontics, we know good dental health requires only a few minutes a day. We thought we’d provide some practical advice on how to improve your or your child’s smile between your adjustment visits at our Madison Park or Queen Anne office.

Start by brushing your teeth twice a day. Proper brushing techniques are an essential part of maintaining good oral health during your orthodontic treatment, as well as preventing gum disease. More care and time are needed to adequately brush your teeth when you are wearing braces. Brushing daily helps remove decay-causing plaque from tooth surfaces. Please consult Drs. Leone or Vaughn if you would like us to review brushing techniques with you or your child. The use of a mechanical toothbrush such as a Sonicare or Oral B can aid in removing plaque around braces. Flossing daily will also prevent plaque to build up between the teeth and prevent stains between your teeth. Research has shown the bacteria of gum disease has been linked to coronary artery disease, stroke, diabetes and memory loss. Lastly, we encourage you to throw away old toothbrushes and replace them every 2 or 3 months, or after an illness.

We hope this helps! If you have any further questions about any of these tips, please contact our office, ask your general dentist during your next scheduled visit! Or, ask us on Facebook!

Tell Drs. Leone and Vaughn about your summer!

August 15th, 2011

The dog days of summer are upon us, and what better time for Drs. Leone and Vaughn to ask our patients about their summer!

Whether you visited our nation’s capital, went on a camping trip or just stayed in Seattle and hung out with friends, we want to know how you’re all spending your summer! Please feel free to share your summer plans and experiences with us below or on our Facebook page as the summer comes to an end soon for a lot of our
patients at Leone and Vaughn Orthodontics!

We look forward to reading all about your adventures!

When you need immediate care, we’re here for you.

August 8th, 2011

We hope you had a great weekend! At Leone & Vaughn Orthodontics, we know true orthodontic emergencies are never convenient nor timely. If you are a patient of record, Dr. Leone or Dr. Vaughn (and our team) are committed to your dental health and are more than willing to see you after hours or over the weekend. As a general rule, you should call the office when you experience severe pain or when you have a painful appliance problem that you can’t take care of yourself. We’ll be able to schedule an appointment to resolve the problem. If you have a orthodontic emergency after regular office hours, please give us a call. If you are calling us after hours, please follow the emergency prompts to contact our team at Leone & Vaughn Orthodontics.

You might be surprised to learn that you may be able to temporarily solve many problems yourself until you visit our Madison Park or Queen Anne office.

We hope you’re all enjoying your summer.

Straight talk with Leone and Vaughn Orthodontics

August 1st, 2011

Happy Monday! Some people wonder why our team at Leone & Vaughn Orthodontics work tirelessly to give our patients straight teeth. Of course it’s nice to have a smile full of evenly aligned teeth, but did you know that straightening your teeth can keep them healthier? Straight teeth lead to better oral hygiene, increasing your chances of keeping your own natural teeth for a lifetime!

Straight teeth are also less prone to decay, because they collect less plaque, the sticky colorless substance that forms on our teeth and leads to tooth decay; and, they are easier to keep clean! And if you’re worried about the appearance of metal braces, we are proud to offer an alternative option for straightening teeth called Invisalign, which uses a series of invisible, removable and comfortable aligners that no one can tell you're wearing.

If you’re wondering whether your teeth might cause problems because they are out of alignment, please give us a call to set up a complimentary orthodontic consultation at our convenient Madison Park or Queen Anne office. Dr. Vaughn or Dr. Leone can help you decide whether or not you will benefit from orthodontic treatment.

Questions? Give us a call ask us on Facebook!

Are you visiting the dentist during your orthodontic treatment?

July 25th, 2011

If you're brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing during your orthodontic treatment at Leone & Vaughn Orthodontics, that’s great! But, don’t forget that it’s also important to visit your general dentist every six months in addition to your visits to our Madison Park or Queen Anne offices. Regular dental checkups are important for maintaining good oral health. Your dentist can:

• Check for problems that might not be seen or felt
• Detect cavities and early signs of decay
• Treat oral health problems early
• Show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth

During an oral exam the doctor will check the health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Checkups will also include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing. If you have not been to the dentist in the last six months, it’s definitely time to schedule an appointment! If you don't have a general dentist, just ask us - Drs. Leone & Vaughn both know plenty of great dentists in the greater Seattle area!

Ask Drs. Leone and Vaughn: “I’m 34 – am I too old for orthodontic treatment?”

July 18th, 2011

Great question, and you are absolutely not "too old" for braces! At Leone & Vaughn Orthodontics, nobody is “too old” for braces! In fact, we read a fascinating statistic recently: adults getting braces has actually jumped 24 percent since 1996! Also, one of every five patients in orthodontic treatment nowadays is over the age of 21. Of course, braces help make your teeth stay strong, healthy and become perfectly-aligned. Are you wearing your mouthguard this summer?

July 6th, 2011

With summer in full force, our team at Leone & Vaughn Orthodontics thought today would be a great time to remind all our young athletes in treatment to take care of both their mouth and appliances while participating in sports - especially contact sports - this summer.

Only by using a mouth guard can kids with and without braces avoid serious sports injuries. The next time you're in for a visit with Drs. Leone and Vaughn, we encourage you to ask us for a mouth guard! In addition, the American Association of Orthodontists has five quick tips for keeping kids safe during sport activities.

• Wear a helmet
• Stretch before and after a game or practice
• Wear protective eyewear
• Wear a face shield to avoid scratched or bruised skin
• Be observant, even as a spectator

We hope you're enjoying your summer, and invite you all to share your summer photos on our Facebook page!

Smile wide! June is National Smile Month!

June 13th, 2011

June is here, so our team at Leone and Vaughn Orthodontics thought we’d tell you June is National Smile Month, and a good time to remind all our patients to practice good oral hygiene between your visits to our convenient Queen Anne or Madison Park offices, as well as your general dentist to avoid cavities and gum disease, among other dental health issues.

That means you too, parents! After all, there's more and more evidence that suggests folks with gum disease are more at risk for serious health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and strokes.

Below are a few simple steps you can take to improve your oral health so that you may celebrate National Smile Month for many, many years to come:

* Brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
* Floss everyday to clean between your teeth and braces.
* Reduce your intake of sugary foods and drinks during your orthodontic treatment
* Visit your dentist regularly (every 6 months or as recommended by your dentist)!

If you have questions about any of these tips, we encourage you to give us a call, ask Drs. Leone or Vaughn during your next visit. Or, you may ask us on Facebook!

Happy Monday!

Ask Drs. Leone and Vaughn: When should my child come in for a consultation?

May 23rd, 2011

Great question, thank you! Many parents assume they must wait until their child has all of his or her permanent teeth to visit our Queen Anne or Madison Park offices for a consultation, only to discover treatment would have been much easier if started earlier.

Ask Drs. Leone and Vaughn: Which foods should I avoid while in braces?

May 9th, 2011

Great question! There are a variety of foods Drs. Gregory Vaughn and Paola Leone would like for you to avoid while you're wearing braces. Some foods can occasionally damage braces, but certain foods can bend the wires or even break the brackets on your braces! If you’re wearing braces, you should avoid starch, sugar and gummy foods, as these foods can be difficult to remove during brushing. Foods that are high in sugar and starch tend to cause plaque, cavities and even tooth decay.

Avoid tough meats, hard breads and raw vegetables such as carrots and celery. Before long, you'll be able to bite a cucumber again. But you'll need to protect your orthodontic appliances when you eat for as long as you're wearing braces.

Foods you should definitely avoid:

• Chewy foods: bagels, hard rolls, licorice
• Crunchy foods: popcorn, ice, chips
• Sticky foods: caramels, gum
• Hard foods: nuts, candy
• Foods you have to bite into: corn on the cob, apples, carrots
• Chewing on hard things (for example, pens, pencils or fingernails) can damage the braces. Damaged braces will cause treatment to take longer.

If you have any questions on which foods you should be avoiding and why, we invite you to give us a call, ask us on Facebook or ask our team during your next visit at our Queen Anne or Madison Park office!

Ask Drs. Leone & Vaughn: Who benefits from braces?

March 29th, 2011

At Leone & Vaughn Orthodontics, we know braces aren’t just for pre-adolescents and teenagers anymore! Both Drs. Leone & Vaughn will tell you that anyone, at any age, can benefit from orthodontic treatment, whether it’s correcting a problem not treated in your younger years, or catching a problem early.

To ensure the best overall treatment, the American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO, recommends that children receive an orthodontic consultation as early as age seven. If a problem is evident, taking action early can spare a lot of treatment and expense down the road.

And if you never received orthodontic treatment when you were young, don’t worry! You’re never too old for a beautiful smile at Leone & Vaughn Orthodontics. Set up an appointment for a consultation and find out how orthodontics will transform your smile, as well as your life!
