Enhance Your Smile

Orthognathic surgery is performed not just to create a beautiful smile, but also to help improve a patient's ability to chew, breathe, and speak.

While braces and clear aligners are great for treating a wide range of tooth and bite misalignments, more intense intervention may be necessary if the misalignment is caused by the positioning of the jaw itself. In that case, orthognathic surgery may be necessary in addition to regular orthodontic care.

Orthognathic surgery, also called orthodontic surgery or corrective jaw surgery, is performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to move the top or bottom jaw forward or back so that the teeth meet correctly.

When performed in partnership with orthodontic treatments such as braces, orthognathic surgery can provide patients with a smile that functions correctly and looks great.

The Surgical Orthodontic Process

Surgical orthodontics is a collaborative process between your orthodontist and an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

The process usually begins with your orthodontist, who will work with you to craft your personalized care plan to get your teeth as straight as possible.

Your orthodontist will then refer you to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, who will perform a procedure to move your jaw into the correct position.

Braces are always needed after the surgery and typically remain in place for several months as your orthodontist fine-tunes your bite and smile, and checks if further treatment with braces is necessary. The whole process can take anywhere from two to three years to complete.

Benefits of Surgical Orthodontics

Surgical orthodontics combines braces with vital corrective jaw surgery to properly align the upper and lower jaws.

These treatments can address a range of orthodontic and general health issues including TMJ disorders, traumatic injuries, improper jaw development or even obstructive sleep apnea.

For patients struggling with these issues, surgical orthodontics can help relieve symptoms such as chronic headaches, while improving their ability to breathe freely, and allowing for proper chewing and speech.
